How To Know What Skin Type You Have (and why it's important!)

Let's jump right in... Today we're talking SKIN TYPES!

****Click here for SBA routines for your particular skin type.

This is a highly requested topic all year round and for good reason... because it's very important! So, why is it important to know your skin type? In a nutshell, knowing your skin type is essential for maintaining healthy and balanced skin. Here are a few more specific reasons why it is so important:

  1. Proper skincare routine: Understanding your skin type helps you tailor your skincare routine to meet your specific needs. Different skin types require different products. For example, dry skin needs extra hydration, while oily skin may benefit from lighter, lower-comedogenic products. By knowing your skin type, you can choose the best cleansers, moisturizers, and treatments for your skin type!

  2. Managing skin conditions: Skin conditions like acne, sensitivity, dryness, or rosacea can vary depending on your skin type. Knowing your skin type can help you understand how your skin may react to certain "triggers". This info helps you to avoid potential irritants and choose the right treatments or remedies to manage certain skin conditions/problems.

  3. Prevention of skin issues: By knowing your skin type, you can take preventive measures to decrease the risk of developing certain skin problems! To demonstrate: Certain skin types may be more prone to clogged pores and acne, requiring regular cleansing and exfoliation to prevent these skin issues. On the other hand, sensitive skin may benefit from gentle, fragrance-free products to help reduce irritation or allergic reactions. Making sense?

  4. Overall skin health: Knowing and understanding your skin type is a must if you want to achieve and maintain overall skin health. By following a skincare routine tailored to your specific needs, you can have a balanced complexion, preventing premature aging, and lessening the risk of potential skin issues! Taking care of your skin according to its unique needs changes the game.

  5. DISCLAIMER: I have to just add this in here for my conscious sake, but of course, your overall lifestyle and diet can impact your skin type GREATLY. Perhaps you struggle with acne and think you have an acne/oily skin type. It's possible you do have this skin type, or perhaps your lifestyle and diet have caused your skin to become unbalanced (hormones play into this), or at minimum exacerbated skin problems. Maybe you have normal skin if you eliminate certain foods that disrupt your hormones and stay away from any products/external chemicals that can cause you to flare up (internally and externally). Now, that's for another blog! I think you get my point here though.

Okay, enough of all that. Let's get into the simple way you can test your skin to find out your skin type!

Skin type test (with video):

Follow this step-by-step simple test to figure out what kind of skin type you have!
1. Wash face with a gentle ALOE or WATER-based cleanser (NOT oil based)
2. Gently pat dry
3. Wait an hour
After an hour, take note of how your skin feels.
Is it tight and very dry to the touch? You probably have dry skin type!
Is your face oily all over? You probably have oily skin!
Is your skin dry in some areas but oily around your forehead, nose, and chin (t-zone)? You may have combination skin if so!
Does your skin feel neither tight or oily and feel normal? You probably have normal skin (aka the least challenging skin type lol!)
We hope this simple but effective test helps you. Remember, we’re always here to help you create the perfect SBA routine for your unique skin needs! Also, we have some routine suggestions right here (click me!) for your skin type!
